  1. My favorite topic that we learned about this year was Astronomy.

  2. This topic talked about how the solar system (planets) were formed, constellation, and the planets.

  3. This topic was cool because i like learning about the stars and planets and i had a chance to learn more about them this time because in middle school the astronomy class didn't talk much about the solar system.

Favorite Planet/Moon

My favorite planet is Jupiter because it is the fastest spinning planet in the solar system even though is massive. It takes Jupiter 10 hours to complete one full rotation on its axis. It's red spot has been around for 350 years and is measured 4o,ooo km across Jupiter but is shrinking as well. Scientist don't know when it will disappear. Jupiter also had 63 moons orbiting around it right now.

Big Bang

What do you think the universe looked like before the Big Bang? What made the universe "bang?"

Before the Big Bang happened there were no stars or sun so i think that the universe was nothing but darkness.

Blog #3-Extrasolar Planets

1. What are the four ways astronomers can detect extrasolar planets? Doppler Shift, Astrometric Measurement, Transit method, Gravitational Microlensing

2. Choose one of the four ways and explain it in detail. The Transit method can help scienctist detect when the stars reduce thier apparent magnitude.

3. In your answer to #2 you chose one way that astronomers detect extrasolar planets. Search the Internet to find how many extrasolar planets have been detected using this method. none just the brightness of the stars.

Is Pluto a Planet?

I think Pluto is a planet because when you look in a astronomy map of all the planets and stars you see all the planets including Pluto. Another reason why i think Pluto is a planet is because it was once a moon of Neptune and had drifted apart and was classified as an official planet in 1999. Also when you watch tv shows such as Sailor Moon, they show all the planets including Pluto.

Global Warming

  1. What is global warming? The increase in temperature due to the process of greenhouse effect

  2. Do you believe in global warming? Briefly explain. I do believe in global warming because we have proof that it does exist like ice caps and glaciers are melting.

  3. Give three pieces of evidence to support your position on number 2. Climate changes, polar ice caps are melting, and summers are more hotter.

  4. Despite your response to #2, there are smart people out there that believe the complete opposite of what you believe. Give three pieces of evidence for someone with the opposing. Global warming does exist because sea levels are rising, sea surface temperatures are increasing, and it's in increase in pollution.

Hurricanes

  1. Which hurricane did you choose? Hurricane Hazel

  2. What category was it on the Saffir-Simpson scale? Category 4

  3. Tell its story. Was first spotted east of the Windward Islands on October 5. It moved through the islands later that day as a hurricane, then it moved westward over the southern Caribbean Sea through October 8. Then it went to the north-northeast occurred from October 9-12, with Hazel crossing western Haiti as a hurricane on the 12th. The hurricane turned northward and crossed the southeastern Bahamas on the 13th, followed by a northwestward turn on the 14th. Hazel turned north and accelerated on October 15, making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near the North Carolina-South Carolina border.

4.How many lives were lost? How much damage did it cause ($)? 95 deaths and $281 million in damage in the United States, 100 deaths and $100 million in damage in Canada, and an estimated 400 to 1000 deaths in Haiti.

Air Masses

  1. The 4 main types of air masses are cT = continental Tropical, cP=continentale Polar, mT=maritime Tropical, and mP=maritime Polar

  2. Hurricanes need maritime Tropical air masses

  3. Continental Tropical is most likely to bring a drought because it is dry and warm

  4. The air mass that brings lake-effect snowstorms is Continental Polar

  5. The 2 other airmasses are highland and arctic.

Greenhouse Effect

1. What is "IR" raditation? IR radiation is energy of small electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum.
2. What are the 3 main greenhouse gases? The 3 main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and water.
3.In your opinion, is the greenhouse effect a good thing or a bad thing? I think that the greenhouse effect is a bad thing because it is melting our polar ice caps and rising sea levels above the globe

Recycle

1. Most people agree that recycling is a good thing. Why, specifically should we recycle glass? We recycle gas cause it can save 9 gallons of fuel oil to make more glass.
2. Which is better: recycling or reusing things? I think that reusing is better because it's easier cause you can do it yourself and it won't be someone else's problem.
3. How can Fayetteville residents recycle? We can recycle by putting recycle items in the blue container and put it out on the street to get pick up.
4. Where is the closest recycling drop-off center to your home (or our school)? The closest recycling center is Cooper Site in Wade, NC
5. List 9 things plastic can be made into once it has been recycled. Recycled plastic can be made into bottles, shower stalls, recycle bins, scouring pads, paint brushes, industrial strapping, drainpipes, plastic lumber, and flowerpots.
6. List 5 things metals can be turned into once it has been melted down. It can be turned into soda cans, automobile parts, siding, appliances and building materials.
7. What can you do to promote recycling? I can promote recycling by putting the recycle container out on the street more.

1. How can scientists tell the age of a tree by looking at the rings? Explain what that means. By looking at how many rings it has.

2. How/why would this be useful? It's useful cause you can tell how old a tree is when it is cut down or if it falls.

3. Is this an example of relative or absolute dating?
Absolute Dating

4. Provide a picture or a tree ring sample.

Blog Post #2-Destruction

I think an earthquake is more destructive because it can cause damgage immediatly unlike volcanoes. An earthquake can shake a house down or maybe a city. It can even kill people. Volcanoes don't do too much because sometimes the lava pours out slowly and it makes getting easier. It's not something that could happen instantly like an earhtquake.

1. Identify the two main types of igneous rocks-Obsidian is a dark-colored volcanic glass that forms from the very rapid cooling of molten rock.

Diorite is a intrusive igneous rock that contains a mixture of feldspar, pyroxene, hornblende and sometimes quartz.

2. Identify the two main types of metamorphic rocks-Phyllite is a foliate metamorphic rock that is made up mainly of grained mica
Marble is a non-foliated metamorphic rock that is produced from the metamorphism of limestone

3. Identify the two main types of sedimentary rocks. Coal is a sedimentary rock that forms from plant debris

Rock Salt is a chemical sedimentary rock that forms from the evaporation of ocean or saline lake water
